Pleasantville was an average town full of normal people.
They didn’t care much for anything abnormal or out of the
ordinary. And they guarded their kids from anything amoral,
so you’d never see a R-rated movie before the 10 o’clock
The paranormal, and anything too creepy or fantastic
was a big no-no in the community. So needless to say,
Halloween was not practiced here, and all channels
that broadcast Halloween channels would be blocked
during the season, and not one decoration could be
That is, before the McCready family moved into town.
They arrived in their large, Victorian style home just
a week before Halloween. And the very first thing
they seemed to do when they got there was decorate
in all the macabre trappings of the shunned holiday.
The kids, Jacob and Anna were picked on in school
and nobody in town would hire poor Charles or Nicki,
their parents. In fact, people tried to drive them out
of town or just ignore them. But the McCreadys
were unshaken, and in fact seemed happy with
how they were treated.
Halloween night came around, but no trick-or-
treaters filled the streets. But Charles McCready
sat on their porch in an antique rocker with a big
bowl of children, waiting for children to come.
And eventually, one child gathered the courage
and defiance of his parents to go up and hold
out his hands. and say “trick-or-treat.”
And after him, more came, and got candy
from Charles. The night ended and everything
went well. The next day however, the children
of Pleasantville were gone. completely vanished,
along with the McCreadys.
